Looking back, Rob now knows exactly why: you cannot build muscle without protein. At 16, Rob asked for — and received — a full weight set for his birthday. At $600, it was his birthday and Christmas gift combined. He threw himself into training with the same intensity, except now it was amplified by actual iron.

That's when the brick house analogy clicked for him. All those workouts were the construction crew. Protein was the bricks. He'd had workers and no materials for two and a half years.
At 17.5, Rob allowed himself to start eating protein. He began having a protein shake post-workout (the anabolic window was heavily hyped in the magazines he was reading), started eating lunch, and made sure to get protein at dinner. The change felt significant after years of near-zero intake.
But protein alone still wasn't moving the needle enough. Reading deeper into the magazines and watching more bodybuilding content, he started understanding what carbohydrates actually did. They weren't the enemy — they were the fuel.
Here's how he framed it: protein is the brick. But who's powering the workers building the house? That's carbohydrates. Without enough carbohydrate energy, the body can't efficiently convert dietary protein into new muscle tissue. Fat was the last piece to fall into place. Rob had initially assumed dietary fat made you fat — a common and understandable oversimplification. What he eventually learned is that dietary fat is necessary for hormonal health, hair, skin, nails, and a long list of physiological functions that directly affect body composition and performance. There's a baseline amount of fat intake your body needs just to operate optimally. Below that threshold, you start paying a health cost that shows up in your physique whether you realize it or not.

For anyone lifting weights and trying to build muscle or improve body composition, target 1.0 to 1.2 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight. That lean body weight figure is key — it's not your current weight if you're carrying significant body fat. If you're not lifting weights at all (which Rob does not recommend), the floor is around 0.6 grams per pound. But for anyone serious about changing their body, you're working in the 1.0–1.2 range.

The result is a specific body composition pattern: pockets of stubborn fat that won't move — inner thighs, lower back, the fold under the glutes, the lower belly just below the navel, under the armpits — paired with increasingly less muscle everywhere else. The scale might go down, but what's being lost is muscle and bone density, not the fat you're actually trying to get rid of.
